Dr Julie Etellin
General Practitioner
Dr Julie Etellin is a family GP who has worked on the Atlantic Seaboard since 2001. I see patients across all ages and particularly enjoy the aging population! What I love about being a GP is the privilege of sharing many experiences over the years with patients and their families.
I always knew I wanted to be a GP, as my dad was a GP in Knysna. He inspired me to follow in his footsteps. After graduating from UCT, I travelled to the UK and completed various 6 month posts in Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Emergency and General Medicine. I decided to return to SA to start my career in General Practice. I have always felt passionate about having a holistic approach to patients and illness management. This led me to complete two Modules in Integrative Medicine through The University of Stellenbosch. I have since been studying further in the field of Functional Medicine which focuses on investigating the root cause of health problems, thus allowing me to manage each patient as an individual with a unique set of circumstances.
I also offer DNA testing with a focus on weight management, health risks, female estrogen metabolism and sport performance. I have completed a course in translational genomics enabling me to understand how genes impact on the manner in which you respond to the world around you. A further interest is identifying risk factors in relation to Alzheimer’s Disease and preventing cognitive decline. I’m a registered Recode practitioner, having completed Dr Dale Bredesen’s course. I am very excited about the direction this is taking me and the possibilities for a novel approach to healthcare, specifically cognitive decline. In this regard, I have partnered with Dr Alice Ashwell to initiate, Hope for Dementia, an online course that assists both patients, families and carers to address issues related to cognitive decline.
