Sonia grew up in the Eastern Cape, matriculated in Stellenbosch and completed her medical degree through Stellenbosch University in 2010.
She spent two years in the Free State where she completed her internship, sometimes under difficult circumstances, at Pelonomi and Universitas Hospital. Disillusioned, not knowing where her path in medicine might lead her, she returned to the Western Cape and started working at New Somerset Hospital in the Emergency Unit. Under the guidance of a mentor, Sonia soon realised her love for general medicine.
In 2014, she started working as a full time medical officer at Vincent Palloti during which time she not only grew tremendously in her clinical practice but also gained new insights into the intricacies of private medicine.
She also successfully completed an additional qualification in this time: diploma in emergency medicine through the South African colleges.
In 2015, she made the move to Mediclinic Cape Town and took on the post of Principal Clinical Manager in the emergency unit there. She thoroughly enjoyed the management and leadership experience during this time.
Sonia joined The Health Team in 2017 and even though she still enjoys doing emergency unit shifts from time to time, she has decided to spend most of her time in family practice.
Sonia has grown to love the Cape Town community and believes strongly in family based medicine. She believes in empowering her patients by making them part of the decision making process.
